Granular filter media is the heart of media filters; careful selection of media ensures adequate filtrate quality and proper reinstatement of the filter to its clean-state conditions upon backwash.

Filter performance is contingent on filtrate quality, filter run time, volume of water required to backwash filter and hence the energy consumed on it. The key to attaining all these goals is good media configuration.

Granular Filter Media is chosen based on the solid loading onto the filter, properties of these solids in the feedwater and the required filtrate quality. Large grain size media provides enough storage volume and longer filter run time before backwash is required while small grain size media removes smaller suspended particles but requires higher driving head.

To ensure proper filter backwash, media bed is sufficiently expanded to allow removal of retained solids. Good expansion can only be accomplished by sufficient backwash velocity that is higher than incipient fluidization velocity. Poorly backwashed filters tend to accumulate mud balls which eventually deteriorate filter performance, lead to pre-mature turbidity break through and cause excessive backwash.

Good selection of filter media requires careful study of media performance. We assist our customers to select good media by providing all technical details pertaining to media such as clean bed pressure drop during filtration, pressure drop across media bed during backwash, minimum fluidization velocity and bed expansion during back wash.
